The Challenge:
When my client first moved into their new build property in Burgess Hill, they were faced with a rather uninspiring, irregularly shaped garden: a simple patio, a patch of lawn, and a slight incline that often turned into a soggy mess.
As a first-time homeowner, they had no prior gardening experience and were eager to create a welcoming space for themselves, their visitors, and their newly adopted kittens. They also desired a garden that would attract wildlife.
The Design Solution:
To address the challenges posed by the sloping land and the desire for a more engaging outdoor space, a retaining wall was incorporated and clad in London Stone Hydra Beige luxury DesignClad. The wall stabilised the slope and added a touch of elegance, completed with Beige Sawn Sandstone coping. The levelled area was perfect for creating a new lawn, ensuring a dry and enjoyable space.
To soften the hard landscaping and create a more inviting atmosphere, garden borders were designed, and filled with a diverse range of plants. These borders enhanced the visual appeal and provided shelter and sustenance for wildlife.
The pergola is a key feature of the garden, which offers a shaded seating area where the client can relax and enjoy the views. The pergola also serves as a focal point and adds architectural interest to the space.
Planting Palette:
The planting scheme was carefully selected to complement the design and meet the client’s preferences. There were a mix of:
- Low-maintenance shrubs: For year-round structure and interest.
- Perennials: To provide seasonal colour and texture.
- Bulbs: For early spring blooms.
- Herbs: Such as bay, rosemary, and thyme, to add fragrance and culinary delights.
The colour palette was kept simple, focusing on calming greens, purples, blues, and whites.
The Outcome:
The transformed garden is now a welcoming and inviting space that meets all the client’s needs.
It’s a place where they are now able to enjoy their garden to the fullest, whether it’s relaxing on the patio, beneath the pergola, entertaining guests, or simply watching their cats explore the new surroundings.
